Megan’s legal career began where it is now — at a DuPage County firm handling family law and criminal defense. But before founding Lafata Law, she took a longer route: seven years as a DuPage County prosecutor trying over 100 cases to verdict, followed by civil litigation at a Chicago insurance defense firm.
That path was deliberate. As a prosecutor, Megan handled everything from DUI and domestic battery to armed robbery and attempted murder, advancing from traffic court to felony and narcotics prosecution. She learned how the state builds cases — and how they fall apart. In civil practice, she added jury trial experience in contract disputes, premises liability, construction litigation, and medical malpractice.
Megan founded Lafata Law to bring that full range of experience to clients navigating divorce and criminal charges. The result: a family law practice backed by real trial credibility, and a criminal defense practice informed by years on the other side.
Megan is licensed in Illinois and federal court in the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois. She serves as a Guardian ad Litem in DuPage County. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, time with family, and White Sox baseball.
